research plan

For my reserach paper I have decided to stick with citizen journalism. What more do I need to know about these rising writer?

I need to look for
  • how citizen journaism came about
  • what is/will be it's impact on traditional journalism
  • what impact will/does it have on traditional writing
  • is citizen journalism good for the public
  • what exactly goes into citizen journalism cites
  • look on NPR
  • search for articles/sources on comppile.org

SO AWAY I GO! Lets see what I can find!!

The world of knowledge and the world wide web

In ancient times most writing was done on scrolls similar to this one. They were not able to hold very much writing on them but poets and philosphers mostly used them as references while giving public readings. Eventually, this scroll was not big enough to hold all of the thoughts these great writers wanted to transcribe and a need for a more suitable writing space was created-the codex. The codex was many scroll pages bound together to make a larger writing space. This eventually led to the book. As the need for knowledge grew, writers eventually created the encyclopedia.

The encyclopedia was a great addition the world of knowledge. These large books were divided into the main disciplines and contained all the knowledge about them. In chapter  5 of Jay David Bolter's book Writing Space, the encyclopedia is seen as a gateway to electronic knowledge. By categorizing the information, the encyclopedia had become an endless resource. Today, the world wide web serves the same purpose. Each day hundreds, even thousands of people hop onto google's search engine trying to find information. Bolter sees the book as becoming a reference to the web abd eventually obsolete. Because the web is so easy to access and contains an infinite amount of information, people may start to forget that books and even libraries exist. Our world is filled with endless technology geared towards making our lives easier.

With invention of hand-held devices, such as the Amazon Kindle, people have access to any book that has been published. Bolter is hinting at the possibility of books becoming a thing of the past. Electronic books are more convenient for people. They can be treated as real books with the ability to mark it the way you would a traditional book. And when you are done, you can just delete it and download a new one. There is no need for accumulating unwanted clutter. It looks like electronic books will take the place of an actual book. The world wide web has given us an endless amount of possibilities when it comes to information. Bolter states that "Cyberspace is a great book of cultural choices that overlap and coincide with the "natural" order (98).

The electronic world is taking over so many things in our lives. Not only can we read entire books or find out information about dolphins, we can also read our local paper or any national paper with the help of the web. In my last post, I wrote about citizen journalists and how they are taking the news into their own hands. With the help of the web, they are able to post "news" that they deem important. Print journalism has taken a heavy blow with the invention of the web. With up to the minute news about everything, who wants to wait for a newspaper to come out. By the time the paper is printed the news it contains is old and something bigger and better is already taking place. It seems that print may soon be going out of style for since both books and newspapers have been electronic. The electronic world has taken it's place in our society and soon books and newspapers will be considered as old as the papyrus scroll.

Citizen Jouralists-Are they wannabe journalists?

After reading the chapter "News Blogs and Citizen Journalism" in Axel Bruns' book Blogs, Wikipedia, Second Life and Beyond, I couldn't keep myself from thinking that the American public is over informed. Since the creation of the world wide web, news has been at the fingertips of every American at any given time of day. There seems to be an over abundance of news outlets. Now it seems that all of the regular news isn't enough for people. Now we have sites that are called citizen journalism sites where people post news that is important to them. One such site is NowPublic. When I visited this site, I noticed it contained a lot of news stories that I had already seen on traditional news sites. Of course there were items that I was not familiar with but it just seemed as if average joe went to a news site and and came back and rewrote something that interested him. I don't wish to offend the citizen journalists however, I do want to get a better understanding of how and why these sites were created. I think I may be overly offended by this because I am personally affected by what happens in the traditional journalsim business.

For my research paper, I wish to take a look further into the idea and creation of citizen journalism. Three topics that come to mind are:

1) Can and will citizen journalism take the place of traditional journalism?

2) How does the gatekeeping process guarantee the articles being posted are authentic?

3) How is citizen journalism redefining traditional journalism?

My favorite song

In the past year I have been following the country band Lady Antebellum. I just love all the songs on their albums! my favorite at the moment is Need You Now. it's like the drunk booty call song but I think it is a song everyone can relate too because we have all had a broken heart at least once. The music video for this song really prtrays the hurt, regret and every emotion that we go through. It is an awesome video! i just LOVE Lady A!!!!

The Wonderful World of Facebook

After a week of being a Facebook member I am ready to give my final review. It is no secret that I was very skeptical of creating a page on this widely popular website. Every day I would have my cousin or a friend tell me that I need to join FB but I would always shoot them down. Each time I did, I would get an earful of how awesome it is and that I would truly love it. I have come to find out through my research that it is seriously the place to be.
I never understood why anyone would want to put every detail of their lives out there for everyone to see. It just never really appealed to me. I was really struggling with if this social networking site would cater to my friendship needs. A lot of my skepticism also had to with not wanting certain people to find or know about my life. However, I have come to find that there are ways to keep people who you do not want to be friends with from seeing what is on your page. I have to say that I am definitely intrigued by FB.

As I navigated to the FB page I had many thoughts racing through my mind. Knowing how to use the site was at the top. When I signed up for Facebook, I had a list of expectations. First and foremost would be the security.

With pictures of my kids and personal information listed, I wanted to make sure that I would be safe. Next on my list was whether or not the site is easy to navigate. I am not very website savvy and I wanted to know whether or not I would be able to use it on a day to day basis. Next would be how accessible the website is. Can I view and write posts from my mobile phone? I am not always home and I would like to be able to check my page when I'm sitting at the doctors office or waiting in line for coffee. I also wanted to know what all the hype is about. Is it really the best invention since the telephone? Well there was only one way to find out!!!!!!! Last but not least.....does Facebook fall under the category of writing space or writing tool? Why don't we get started!

This is what Facebook looks like when you sign on to your page.

It is actually very easy to use. You fill out the information that you want to be be seen on your page. After you get to your wall, it gives you a list of people who you might know and would want to friend. I couldn't believe how accurate it was! Under settings, you are able to control who can see your page as well as what you are posting.  It was just what I wanted. I set mine to friends only. Meaning only people whom I friend can view what I am writing and posting. It's nice to share pictures of your kids with your friends who live in a different state and Facebook allows me to do this in a manner that is secure. I am in total control of my information and that works wonders for me. If you are still confused on how to start a Facebook page, the website techsoup.org has created a how-to guide which gives step by step instructions. The guide includes pictures of fake pages to help you see exactly how your page will look. It is very a very helpful guide, especially for people who are not very tech savvy. Now that we have logging in taken care of, lets see how accessible FB really is.

Logging on to FB from my computer is as easy as pie! : ) I have an FB bookmark on my toolbar that allows me to quickly get to the site. Of course, the website is made for easy accessbility from a computer but how about form your phone? Well, if you have a smart phone or android, you are in luck. Once I signed up for the website, I got on my phone and found an FB application available for download. Within a couple of minutes I was now able to chenck my FB page from my android phone! From there, I am able to check my page, write a post and post photos. It is awesome! Now when I am bored and away from my computer, I just whip out my phone and hop on FB!!! What could be better?! So does it live up to the hype?

I would have say that FB definitely lives up to the hype! I am so ecstatic that I joined this very contagious website. Yes, it's true. It is very addictive and spreads like the plague. Through this website, I have reconnected with both friends and family that I have not spoken to in at least three years. I say forget my ten year high school reunion ( yes I am that old!) because I have just reunited with my entire senior class!! It is amazing how this one place can connect you to people from not just your backyard but from all over the world. I am definitely a huge fan of FB and I will continue to use it for as long as it is available.

After using this highway of shared information, I have come to the conclusion that FB is more of a writing space than a writing tool. A writing to should help enhance your writing and I do not believe that Facebook does that. I believe that since this is a social networking site, it is just a space to connect with people. An example of a writing tool to me would Google Wave or even just a blog. As a writing space, FB gives me a place to express myself in any way I want.On this site I am able to voice my opinions about what's going on in the world or just how my kids are driving me crazy. It is a nice place to send a quick hello to a friend or make plans with someone. While most people keep their posts short, you are actually able to write a nice amount of words. I like it because you can just give a quick update about your day or how you are feeling. It is a nice place to vent.

I am fully enjoying what FB is giving me the power to do. It was a shock to learn that FB was created by a teenager! Why couldn't it have been me!!! j/k : D.  If you don't already have a Facebook page, I strongly recommend creating one!

Getting the hang of it

Well, things are going a lot smoother with facebook or FB. I was so surprised to see that I had 14 friend requests! I feel really special now : ) I have to say I find it very interesting. I have found friends who are out of state and family in L.A. I still have not posted anything on it because I don't know what to write. I guess I will just put a greeting and a little about myself. I still can't believe that 14 people wanted to friend me : ) It amazes me how fast they found me considering I just set up my page on monday.

I am starting to that FB is just as much a writing tool as it is a space. It gives you the chance to write whatever they want as well as keep in touch with people. When you post a comment, you can talk to multiple people at one time. It's great for figuring out plans. I think it's nice to be able to talk to more than one person at a time.

Well, I'm off. I want to really interact with FB and all of it's features. I will be posting once more before I come my final decision about FB. Stay tuned! : )

FaceBook

Ok. I just created my facebook page and I have no idea how to use it! I'm still a little skeptical about having one but maybe I just have to learn how to really use it. This should be interesting!

Writing Space vs. Writing tool

The world wide web is a giant playground for people who want to be in the spotlight. Anyone can be a writer, video producer or singer with the help of blogs and youtube. But are these sites considered writing tools or writing spaces. For my review,I am finally caving and creating a facebook page. I have been against getting one from the beginning and I think it's time to test it out. I think facebook is a writing space. Lets see if I change my mind after creating my page.
